Dodo Free Internet Access
APC has dogged Dodo's wireless internet access offer! With Dodo Internet's big news yesterday and its tv's offering "FREE Internet"!
Wait! Before you diss it, here is my review of this offer.
What do you need to get the free internet access?
- Transfer your home phone line rental to Dodo. This will cost you $32.90 per month. Now Telstra offers a couple of packages for home phone. The Homeline Budget plan for $19.95 per month seems quite good, although you wouldn't want to be making too many phone calls on it. If you went the package above HomeLine Complete plan which would set you back $26.95 per month, where you could definately make some more phone calls. Although you would need to make about 100 local calls on the Budget Plan before you should be upgrading to the $26.95 per month. I use my mobile instead of my home phone and only use the home phone for internet access or calling FREECall numbers.
Where are the catches?
- Bandwidth - You only get 150mb's and you can only use 75mb's between 9am and 1pm and the other 75mb's between 1pm and 9am. So you are going to need to manage your usage hardcore!

- Excess Bandwidth costs - After the 150mb's you are charged 18c per mb. Although there is a cap on this at $29.99. Thats pretty good. So you are going to pay a total of $62.89 per month ($32.90 + $29.99). I assure you now you are going to go over the 150mb's because thats 50seconds of usage on ADSL 2.
- Throttling of speed (Slower speed after the first 300mb's) - Your going to be getting 64kps speeds after the first 300mb's. Thats going to drive you crazy. Its only 8kps faster that a dialup modem!
- Dodo has a history of bad customer service - There are A LOT of posts on Whirlpool forum about some seriously bad experiences by customers. Customers who couldnt stop their credit card getting billed. Here are some stats from a recent Whirpool survey, 53% of customers waited more than 20 minutes on their customer support line. Optus and Telstra only had about 14% of customers waiting over 20 minutes on the line. I have never been with Dodo but I do have Telstra Adsl 2.0 and it rocks! I havent struggled with it at all and my customer support has been really good.
Here are some more details on the actual offer:
