3G driving mobile broadband growth

Mobile broadband uptake has exploded globally with the advent of 3G with huge global growth over the last 18 months, said research group Ovum.

Global consulting firm Ovum released figures that show users accessing the internet using mobile broadband enabled laptops and mobile handsets will generate revenues of US$137 billion globally by 2014. This projected revenue is 450% more than 2008.

Ovum reported that users of mobile broadband services (3G and 3G+ technologies) will grow from 181 million in 2008 to over 2 billion in 2014, growth of 1024 percent. This is an incredibly massive growth rate for the mobile broadband market.

Furthermore, in 2014 Ovum forecasts that “there will be 258 million users worldwide accessing mobile broadband services”. This will largely consist of users with USB mobile broadband modems, data-cards or devices such as laptops embedded with 3G modems.

One of the key factors contributing to the growth of the mobile broadband market is the unavailability of fixed-line internet services. This is certainly the case in the Australian mobile broadband market seeing the growth of wireless internet providers due to Australia’s poorly maintained copper network.

People want to remain connected anywhere and everywhere, and 3G Mobile Broadband is complimentary to this need.
