3G Wireless internet rush casts doubt on National Broadband Network

“An analyst with Goldman Sachs JB Were, Christian Guerra, said in research that falling wireless prices and increased quality mean the steady flow of customers from fixed-line broadband to wireless is becoming a tsunami, undermining the economic case for the network.” SMH reported.

There has been enormous growth in the number of 3G wireless internet subscribers in Australia, with six times as many subscribers signed up to wireless broadband as fixed-line broadband between June and December in 2008. In that same period, Telstra projected 155,000 new wireless broadband subscribers on it’s NextG network for the period, but exceeded their sales projection by 155% reaching over 240,000 new wireless broadband subscribers between Jun – Dec ‘08.

Wireless internet subscriptions through providers including 3 Mobile Broadband and Virgin Mobile Broadband are also growing due to the convenience and productivity benefits of mobile broadband.
