Australians shifting from fixed-line internet to wireless mobile broadband

Goldman Sachs’ telecommunications team of analysts reveal that recent telco market data reflects a significant shift from fixed line services to wireless internet services.

The rate at which Australians are shifting from fixed internet connections to wireless internet is accelerating at a rate greater than previously anticipated with a  “dramatic slowdown” in the growth of fixed line broadband.

The analysts reported that the “Net adds” for wireless broadband, were six times the net adds for fixed line broadband. The report highlighted that the following major factors driving the enormous growth in the number of wireless broadband connections:

  • 3G Wireless Internet is now available at lower prices
  • Wireless internet providers have expanded their networks and now provide greater network capacity and coverage
  • Faster download speeds
  • Improved hardware options with the use of wireless broadband datacards and USB dongles

Wireless internet technology is constantly evolving. In 8 years we will potentially see the completion of the National Broadband Network in Australia, but who knows what wireless technologies will be available by then, that could potentiallydiminish the importance of the new National Broadband Network.
