Cheap wireless internet plans from mobile broadband providers on the way
Cheaper wireless broadband could soon be on it’s way. Australian Mobile broadband providers could soon begin to charge more for services to actual ‘mobile’ users to try and manage traffic volumes and make their pricing and business models more profitable, whilst charging less for people using mobile broadband at home.
Australian wireless internet providers are looking for ways to get more subscribers on to their networks. One strategy that will be possibly trials by Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) is to lower the price for those that are using mobile broadband modems at home rather than truly mobile broadband users, using wireless internet away from their home.
Instead of traditional peak and off-peak time slots typically used with ADSL internet connections, one concept to get more traffic when network usage is low is to display a message to mobile broadband users along the lines of “We’re experiencing peak traffic at the moment. If you want to get cheaper service, download at 11pm and we’ll give you half price.”
“Those that sell a chunk of capacity at a fixed price want to optimise their traffic streams to reduce the cost per megabyte. It costs up to five times more to deliver a megabyte over mobile networks than a fixed line service so the challenge for operators is how to manage that traffic and make it more profitable.” said vice-president of A/NZ and Pacific for Acision, Bill Dekker.
The end result is that mobile broadband is more than likely going to cost less if you are using it at home, making it even more feasible as a complete replacement for your fixed-line ADSL internet. Plans that have reduced costs when being used at home will be an attractive option for families and a good wireless internet deal for university students.
