World’s Fastest Broadband at $20 per home

Everyone loves really fast broadband – don’t you? NYT reports that the “fastest consumer broadband in the world is the 160-megabit-per-second service offered by J:Com, the largest cable company in Japan.”

The article identified that J:Com only required an investment of  $20 per home passed in order to upgrade its cable network and be able to provide this fast broadband connection to each home. In contrast, US company Verizon is paying $817 per home passed to wire it’s neighbourhoods for its FiOS optic network.

The experience in Japan suggests that US companies could boost their internet speeds to be 5 to 10 times faster right away. The problem is the mentality of cable companies in the US. There is little competition in areas not served by Verizon and it’s FiOS optic network.

There is also the argument that people don’t have a demand for such a high-speed internet connection – absurd! Once they’ve experienced a super fast 100mbps internet connection, they will realise the impact it can have on productivity and generally improving their internet experience.

The Australian government’s National Broadband Network announcement will see Australians benefiting from 100mbps connections to their home. This infrastructure decision by the Australian government will have positive impact for Australian home and businesses and help Australia catch up to other countries with much better technology and telecommunications infrastructure.
